Dipika credits Aussie coach Fitzgerald for her new high
Times of India, Mumbai : 28/12/2011

MUMBAI: Having wrapped up her season on a winning note in Hong Kong, India No.1 Dipika Pallikal is back home, for a much-needed winter break with friends and family.

And for the 20-year-old, a Merry Christmas is only going to be followed by an even happier New Year.

Come January 2012, the ace squash player will find herself at a career high World Ranking of 15, becoming the first Indian to accomplish the feat.

"I had set top 20 as the target for this season. I broke into top 20 in September. So, I had to move on to a new goal. I am very glad indeed," said a composed Dipika. Personally, she finds a lot of room for improvement.

"Looking back at the season, I let it slip in the match against Madeline Perry in the Hong Kong Open. I wish I could win that."

Mostly, it has been a cracker of a season for the current World No.17, taking into account her three WISPA titles, the tournament wins in US and the quarters berth in the World Open.

"Overall it's been a rather good year for me. Although the first half was pretty quiet, things started moving upwards from August and things have gone to plan ever since. I have beaten some of the top players. I have been injury free and healthy, which is a big positive."

But the literature major from Chennai's Ethiraj Women's College is not ready to sit pretty on her laurels.

"I guess, now is the real test. I have reached where I wanted to and now it is all about improving on that. Consistency is the key." She flies to the US to participate in the Tournament of Champions next month.

According to her, the one factor that has made a key difference to her performance is her coach Sara Fitzgerald.

"Shifting base to Melbourne has been a deciding factor. My trainer Sara Fitzgerald, who herself has been a five-time world champion knows what goes into proper training. Staying and training with her has helped me a lot. It has been a great boost."

Ask her about her New Year resolution, and Deepika says, "I want to remain injury-free and healthy and enjoy my game. I also want to break into the Top-10."

Dipika Wins WISPA Dread Squash Series 2: October 16, 2011

Dipika Pallikal faced her toughest tournament match in the final of WISPA $12,000 Dread Series 2 in Washington, DC but won in three games, completing a shut out of her opponents.  Sarah-Jane Perry (ENG), the unseeded surprise finalist, proved in her loss that reaching the final was no fluke.

Perry dropped two of the first three points in the match, then went on a tear, putting four winning shots out of reach of her speedy and graceful opponent as she built a 7-3 lead.  The pair traded points to 9-5, then Pallikal reeled off a six point streak and closed out the game on a winning serve.  It was the first time all weekend any of her opponents reached nine points in any game.

Pallikal said “it took me a while to adapt to her style, and I found I had to keep it tight and deep to avoid getting blocked” or volleyed by her six-foot tall opponent.

The rising star from India continued her run in game two, showing an impressive display of shot making with a variety of winning shots that included boasts, a cross court nick, drops and dying length as she built an 8-1 lead on the way to an easy 11-3 victory.

Perry said “I knew Dipika had great racquet skills, and if I hit anything loose, she’d make it very difficult.”

Game three delighted the crowd, as both players played nearly error free squash and displayed flair with their shots.  The see-saw battle saw at least six lets on the way to a 7-7 tie.  Then Pallikal again showed her brilliance on the court, winning three points before Perry erred on match ball.

After the match, Pallikal expressed satisfaction with her performance in a series of tournaments in the United States, saying it’s “been a good week and I played well.”

FINAL:
Dipika Pallikal beat Sarah-Jane Perry 11-9, 11-3, 11-7

Sarah-Jane Perry beat Latasha Khan 14-12, 11-9, 9-11, 5-11, 11-4

PSA World Series Delaware Investments US Open, Philadelphia , USA

Saurav and Suchde loses in qualifying finals of US Open : (30/9/2011)

Ryan Cuskelly downed the highest-ranked player in the qualifiers of the Delaware Investments US Open to lead a pair of Australians through to the main draw of the fifth PSA World Series squash event of the year in Philadelphia .

Ghosal found the Australian just too steady and too determined as Cuskelly battled his way to an 80-minute upset. The first two games were shared, then the New South Wales-born 24-year-old took a crucial lead after saving a game ball in the third game.

Ghosal's renowned speed around court was much in evidence, but Cuskelly was controlling the rallies well, and more often than not it was the Indian who was going for the risky shot to try to finish the rallies.

Midway through the fourth the effort seemed to be telling on Cuskelly as, for the first time, he looked fatigued and from four-all he fell 8-4 behind with Ghosal seeming to be taking charge. But the left-handed Aussie found some extra reserves to level at nine-all and force two final errors from the Indian racket to win 11-7, 6-11, 13-11, 11-9.

There was further disappointment for the Indian camp at Drexel when Siddharth Suchde, from Mumbai, went down 7-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-9 to Swiss number one Nicolas Mueller.

Mueller had to withstand a fast-paced attack from Suchde, who took the first game and opened up a good lead in the second.

Unfazed, Mueller fought back to take the second and third games, but in the fourth Suchde again attacked at pace and led 7-4. His strategy was high risk though, and several clips of the tin brought Mueller back into the game, and from nine-all two more errors brought relief to the Swiss and disappointment to the Indian.

The 20-year-old Indian, ranked 24th in the World, won her third WISPA (women’s professional squash tour) title on Sunday after beating giant-killer Yathreb Adel of Egypt 11-6, 12-10, 11-9 in the final. Khan wins while Joshna retired hurt in the semifinals of
Hamptons Open: New York (16/8/2011)

Latasha Khan won the 7th WISPA title of her career this week at the Tour 8 Hamptons Open in Southampton , New York .

The first round saw all the top eight seeds move through to the quarter finals, although for some it was far from easy. Second seed Joshna Chinappa progressed in straight games over American, Elpinki Clement.

The first semi final saw Khan take on Sina Wall of Germany . Khan's experience was just too much for Wall she eased through to the final without being tested too much by the German.

The second semi final ended in retirement with the match poised at two games all. Chinappa had built up a two game advantage before Cornett stormed back. In the fourth it appeared that Chinappa had a self inflicted injury and she was unable to continue in the fifth and retired hurt.

The final saw a match up between two players separated in age by 18 years! They had met once before back in 2010 at the Sun and Surf with Khan winning in four games. Khan wasn't to be denied again and she held off the threat from the young Canadian in three games. Cornett had her chances in the second game, pushing it to a tie break but she couldn't find a way past Khan precise shot making.

Khan at 38 becomes the second oldest player to ever win a tour title, only being eclipsed by England legend Suzanne Horner who was 40 when she won the Swiss Open back in 2003.

For Cornett it was an incredible fifth final of the year and likely place in the world's top 50 in next month's rankings.

PSA Challenger 5 MANTIS Fantasysquash.Net Nottingham Open, Nottingham , England (14/08/2011)

Sharpes Cuts Through Mahesh in 1st round and Anthony Graham in the finals

Charles Sharpes survived an all-English final when he beat Anthony Graham 3-1 in the inaugural MANTIS Fantasysquash.Net Nottingham Open to win the PSA World Tour Challenger 5 title at Nottingham Squash Club in England .

But the London-born 2nd seed had to fight from the very start of the tournament - battling through five-game marathons lasting 96 against Mahesh Mangaonkar of India 3-2 in the 1st round and 108 minutes game against Ben Coleman (Eng) in the quarterfinals before seeing off unseeded Dutchman Sebastian Weenink in a 51-minute four-game semi-final.

Sharpes dominated from the start in the final, hitting good width and length and then moving onto the loose ball early and putting Graham under a lot of pressure.

Graham tried to slow the pace in the second, finding a better length and using height to recover and extend the rallies. But from 8-4 down, Sharpes managed to find the nick and his length and found a way back into the game to go on a seven-point run to take the game 11-8.

Graham reduced the deficit in a scrappy third game - but 19-year-old Sharpes came back in the fourth, getting back to basics, hitting straight and finding his length. From four-all, Sharpes pulled away to close out the match 11-5, 11-8, 8-11, 11-4 after 74 minutes.
