All India Inter - University Squash Championship 2008
MUMBAI University are the champions: Chennai (30th Dec 2008)
University of Mumbai defeated University of
Delhi 3-2 in the final of the all-India inter-university squash men’s team
championship, avenging its defeat in last year’s final at Mumbai against
the same opponent.
The clash ended with a little bitter, but
enthralling match between Mumbai’s Kunwarpal Singh and Delhi’s Varun
Prakash, both of whom arguing constantly with the referee over obstruction
calls.
The final game of the match was one sided
affair as Kunwarpal destroyed Varun 11-3. The first four games were neck
to neck fight. Varun’s tendency to find the tin in tackling balls above
his waist and to go over the side out-lines in playing his lobs, which had
shown itself intermittently till then, cost him heavily.
Delhi had lost the first two matches quite
easily, with Raghav Behl and Prateek Chalia beaten by Laxman Joshi and
Cyrus Vakil.
But Delhi had come back from a similar
situation in winning its semi final against Anna and demonstrated its
bounciness again.
Gunraj Singh began the revival with a 3-1 win over Nitin
Chauhan, and Uday Das prevailed over Arun Sharma.

India Inter - University Squash Championship 2004 Mumbai
regain varsity crown
By: A Mid Day Correspondent
September 28, 2004
Formidable Mumbai
University expected a strong challenge from arch-rivals Delhi.
Instead, what the former champions got was an easy triumph that helped the
hosts regain the All India Inter University Squash title at the Bombay
Gymkhana glass back courts yesterday. Mumbai, who won a hat-trick of titles from 2000-2002, thrashed defending
champions Delhi 3-0.
“It turned out to be pretty easy,” explained a delighted Mumbai
captain Supreet Singh. “They missed their three top players which made a
big difference to their fortunes. It certainly would have been a close
contest otherwise.”
A depleted Delhi played without key players, Gaurav Nandrajog, Dhruv
Dhawan and Yashvardhan Singh and none in the Mumbai squad were really
tested.
“But I was particularly impressed with Bipin Batra, who played a good
opening game in the final. We also had depth in our team, with the
strongest third, fourth and fifth players. We know each others games and
we came together very well,” revealed Supreet Singh.
For Delhi skipper Prashant Paritosh the disappointment was hard to palate
and it was very transparent.
“As expected, we
reached the final, but we had hoped to give Mumbai a harder time. We
missed our key players very badly. We’ve beaten them in the past and
there was nothing special about this (Mumbai) team,” said Paritosh.
