TOWN: Kush Kumar in the under-15 and Akshay Deepak in the u-19 were the only
Indian finalists in the PBA Penang International Junior Squash Championships
played in the first week of June.

Wee Nee ended her junior days in the in style when she captured the girls’
Under-19 crown .
The
18-year-old, who has already won the Under-11, Under-13, Under-15 and
Under-17 titles, completed her collection with a convincing 11-6, 11-8, 11-8
win over Australia’s Tamika Jayde Saxby in the final.
“It was a final I wanted to win badly as I was eager to end my campaign in
the junior category with a complete set of titles,” said Wee Nee.

“This win will surely boost my confidence when I compete in the Milo All
Stars tournament, which will begin on Monday (tomorrow).”
Wee Nee, whose sister Wee Wern is the national No. 3, is eager to live up to
her Under-19 top billing in the Milo All Stars, which will be held at the
Astaka courts in Petaling Jaya.
Wee Nee’s victory sealed a triumphant day for Penang, whose girls won four
of the five titles at stake.
Among them was the fast-improving Vanessa Raj.The 14-year-old St George’s
Girls School Form Two student, who bowed out in the quarter-finals last
year, bagged the Under-17 title after overcoming Singapore’s Mao Shi Yuan
11-8, 9-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-4.Vanessa too will be bouyed by the result ahead
of the Milo All Stars tournament.
The other two girls who made Penang proud were Celine Yeap, who won the
Under-15 title and pint-sized Nur Aliah Izzati, who bagged the Under-11
crown.
In the boys’ section, Choeng Kah Wah of Perak bagged the under-19 crown
after overcoming India’s Akshay Deepak 11-5, 11-6, 11-5 in the final.
Pakistan’s Al Bukhari was the only non-Malaysian winner in the tournament
after defeating his compatriot Mahed Fared 11-6, 11-8, 11-3 in the boys’
Under-17 final.

Under-11: Mivesh Kumar (Ked) bt Nik Mohd Shakirin (Ked) 11-6, 6-11,
11-5, 11-3.

Open Squash 2008

After the success in the
Malaysian Open in the under-15 section recently, Aparajitha defeated Shria
Khatri 7-9, 3-9, 9-6, 9-0, 9-2 in the final. It proved a memorable finish
for this 10th standard student.
A member of the Indian
team to the Asian junior championship to be held in Busan in a couple of
weeks, this twin-success should augur well for Aparajitha, who will be
playing in the under-15 section. Another success story from Penang was
that of Kush Kumar in the under-13 category who won the title beating
Gurshan Singh of Malaysia 9-4, 9-2, 9-7

Anaka
& Ravi win Penang Junior Squash

Anaka Alankamony (Girls u13) and Ravi
Dixit (Boys u17) returned victorious from the Penang International Junior
Squash Championships. Anaka was the only Indian double winner of the
Penang Open as well as the Malaysian Junior Open (June).
Anaka once again defeated county mate
Saumya Karki in the final, 9-1, 1-9, 9-5, 10-9 proving that these two are
the leading players on the Asian circuit in their age group. Anaka and
Saumya won their semi finals in straight games defeating Malaysians, Yong
Sue Ann and Celin Yeap respectively.
Ravi Dixit defeated Ng Jo Wen, winner of
the Malaysian Junior Open, in the final of the Penang Junior in close four
games 9-7, 9-2, 8-10, 10-8. Ravi kept the pressure from the start using
his drops to great effect. In the semi final, Ravi turned the tables on
South African Stephano Gras 9-4, 9-6, 9-0. At the Malaysian Open Ravi had
lost to Stephano in 5 set thriller.
This is Ravi’s 1st international title
in the boys u17 category, he had previously won the Scottish Junior Open
in Dec 2006 in the u15 category.
Other Indian’s making the top 4 were
Anwesha Reddy (Girls u17) , Ramit Tandon (Boys u15) – runner up, Dheeya
Somaiya (Girls u15), Pankhuri Malhotra (Girls u11), Akshay Deepak
(Boys u15) 4th position. |
