Speed 93
Intra-Club Squash Championship

2nd Speed 93 Inter Club Squash Championship

The culmination of the first Inter Club leg of the 2nd Speed 93 Inter Club Squash Championship saw Rohan Gracious and Vikram Malhotra chart out slightly different courses for victory as they asserted their supremacy in the men’s open and boys under-19 categories respectively at the Willingdon Sports Club, Mahalaxmi.

Maintaining his superb run of form, Gracious, who earlier in the month had stamped his class in the ISP Mumbai Open Squash tournament at Khar Gymkhana, made short work of Rohit More in the men’s open final, scripting an authoritative 9-4, 9-1, 9-6 victory.

Meanwhile, in the boys under-19 segment, Vikram Malhotra, who thwarted a spirited challenge from Dhiraj Nagpal in the last four stage, was not exactly  proficient in his approach, encouraging enough for Naishadh Lalwani to stay in the contest.

However in the final analysis, Malhotra’s rich repertoire of strokes stood him in good stead against Lalwani and the former prevailed 9-3, 8-9, 9-1, 9-3.

Results:

Final :
Boys U-19 : Vikram Malhotra bt Naishadh Lalwani 9-3, 8-9, 9-1, 9-3;

Squash: Three defeats will not deter Vora
   By: Sudheendra Tripathi
   April 12, 2004

It must have been a feeling of déjà vu for Sahil Vora. For, the 19-year-old, pitted against former national champion Manish Chotrani in the men’s final of the Speed 93 intra-club and inter-club squash championship, which concluded at the Cricket Club of India yesterday, had to settle for the second spot for the third successive time this season.

Despite going down 15-17, 1-15, 15-12, 16-17, Vora is confident that he can conquer his nemesis. “It won’t be long before I defeat him. It will be in the next tournament,” he said with confidence.

The tall claims that Vora made after the match though, were not propelled by a brashness-of-youth kind of an attitude. But is backed by strength of character.

“I used to tire out towards the death of the match in the previous occasions that I lost. Today though, stamina was not the cause of defeat.

We fought hard and I made a few mistakes that cost me the match,” he noted. “But now I have covered that (stamina) aspect. I see no reason why I can’t win now,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chotrani, who returned from the South Asian Federation Games that concluded in Islamabad, Pakistan, recently, suggested that it would not be easy for Vora to dethrone him.

“The conditions in Pakistan were not as severe as they are here. It was very hot and humid as a result of which I was finding it a bit difficult. But that won’t be the case always,” he cautioned.

Chotrani, Anvekar lead Otter’s charge.

Players from Otters Club claimed four of the five titles on offer in the third leg of the Speed 93 intra-club and inter-club squash championship at the Otters Club glass-back courts late on Sunday night.

Former national champion Manish Chotrani and Deepali Anvekar led the Otters charge as they both bagged their second consecutives titles when they won the men’s and women’s crowns respectively.

Chotrani wins Speed squash title
By: A Mid Day Correspondent
January 19, 2004

Former National champion Manish Chotrani of Otters Club showed great touch as he easily won the men’s title in the second leg of the Speed 93 Intra-Club and Inter-Club Squash Championship at the Bombay Gymkhana yesterday.

Chotrani, who missed the first leg held at the Cricket Club of India (CCI) last month, brushed aside the challenge from Bipin Batra of Bombay Gymkhana winning the final in three straight games.

The Otters Club players faced initial resistance from his opponent before he coasted to a 15-13, 15-12, 15-7 victory.

Deepali Anvekar made it a grand double for Otters Club as she bagged the women’s crown. In the final Anvekar proved far too strong for Shivangi Paranjpe as she scored a 15-4, 15-5, 15-3 win in a little over 20 minutes.

Earlier, Anvekar tamed Shivangi’s elder sister, Madhura, who had won the first leg, in a semi-final encounter. In the other semi-final Shivangi scored a fluent victory over Shaheeda Madraswala of CCI.

Rushbah Vora of CCI produced another sterling performance to overcome Cyrus Vakil of Wellingdon Sports Club and claim his second successive title in the boy’s under-19 event. Vora, who had defeated Sadiq Madraswala in the first leg, had things going his own way as he romped to a 15-11, 15-12, 15-13 win.

Vaman Apte of Bombay Gymkhana also won his second title when he got the better of club mate Shankar Basu in the men’s over 45 final. Apte rallied strongly after losing the first game to record a 10-15, 15-3, 17-15, 15-7 triumph.

Gopi Mohite of Bombay Gymkhana lifted the men’s over 35 title beating Rajesh Rajani of Khar Gymkhana 15-4, 15-7, 15-14.

Intra-Club and Inter-Club 1st leg Squash Championship (29-12-2003)

Vora stretched
Mid-day : December 29, 2003

For Rushabh Vora, it seemed this was the worst day to be on a squash court.

The effects of a lazy Sunday afternoon looked obvious as he stuttered his way to a win in the final over Sadiq Madraswala in the first leg of the Squash Racquets Association of Maharashtra-Speed 93 Intra-Club and Inter-Club Squash Championship at the Cricket Club of India.

Vora, ranked in the top five under-19 players in the country, suffered due to an inconsistent game and was stretched all the way before a 10-15, 15-10, 10-15, 15-11, 15-10 victory.

“I played badly at times and Sadiq played really well. I was expecting an easy match but in the end struggled to win it,” Vora said.

The fast-improving Madraswala looked the better player for the first three games, but down 1-2 Vora focused himself to win the next two games.

“He was dominating and in the middle of the fourth game, I just took a minute and thought about the match. Then I slowed down the pace of the game,” said Vora who was also given a shouting by his elder brother, Sahil after he won the fourth game.

“He told me I have to win this match and that I was not going to throw it away,” said Vora who recently attended a 22-day selection camp for the Indian team to the World Junior Championship to be held next year.

“The camp was really tough and they have short listed a few names. They haven’t declared the names as yet, but I think I am one of them. There will be one more camp and then the team will be selected.”

With Vora’s win, CCI dominated the first leg of the tournament as Sahil won the men’s event and Darius Surti claimed the over-35 title.

The second leg will be played from January 17 at Bombay Gymkhana.

Intra-Club and Inter-Club 1st leg Squash Championship
