RITWIK WINS INDIA'S RATE SQUASH TITLE ABROAD

Ritwik Bhattackarya won a rate international squash title for India when claiming the Pre-Asian GAmes gold in Busan, Korea. In the final at the Yang San College courts, Ritwik, the current national champ, beat Vincent Cheung of Hong Konf, 9-5 9-4 5-9 9-3. The first and second games were fairly easy. Ritwik then lost concentration being down were fairly easy. Ritwik then lost concentration being down -8. He fought back to 5-8 but a luck shot by Vincent helped him claim the game. In the fourth Ritwik came back strongly and did not give his opponent any chance.

The Pakistanis were absent, players like Ong Beng Hee, Kenneth Low, Amjad Khan so the field was not tough. Ritwik says he was not playing his best so it was a big relie to have come through and won fairly comfortably. He is still training under Neil Harvey, Peter Nicol's coach and is planning to continue. He will be back to London for training. The whole of July is heavy training and he will be playing some PSA events in mid-August.


Meanwhile, the Asian Squash Federating also met during the Pre-Asians and chalked out plans to stage the Asian Games event. The meeting was attended by N.Ramachandran, president Asian Squash Federation, Srivatsan Subramanium, Secretary-general, and Muneer Sait, treasurer, along with the president of the Korean Squash Federation.

The ASF also had its second meeting relating to the development of squash in the region. David Mul, the ASF vice-president from Hong Kong and Yusuf Moshen of Kuwait attended the meeting.

RITWIK LOSES IN ATLANTA OPEN
National squash Champion Ritwik Bhattacharya lost in the quarter finals of the Atlanta Open Squash tournament. Bhatacharya went down to Australia's Michael Robberds in a five-game thriller 11-15 15-11 14-15 15-10 17-14.
