SHIRGAOKAR DUP KEEP THEIR COOL TO TRIUMPH

The 34th event organised by INDIAN SQUASH PROFESSIONALS saw many ups and downs in the doubles event. Finally the father and son combination of Shaishir and Niraj Shirgaokar (Otters Club) claimed the tittle by beating Xavier Marquis and Bunty Singh (Juhu Centaur). An Experienced doubles pair, the Shirgaokars were fprced to battle till the last point against newcomers. After being one game down they won the second to be one-all. In the decider they were trailing by 11-14 but they didn't loose theri cool and were 14-all. They were lucky as Bunty Singh hit the tin in the last point. They won 13-15, 15-13, 15-14. In the team event. The club prevailed against the favourities Otters Club A 2-0 to win the tittle after Saket Wali overcame a stiff flight from Otter's Vishal Kapoor in a thrilling tie. Amitpal Kohli gave The Club the lead by winning the opening with a 15-13, 15-11 win over Rohan Juneja, which left Vishal Kapoor with the onus of bringing Otters back into the match.Playing with a handicap of 8, Kapoor,the winner of the U-19 title in the Singapore Open lost the opening game in dramatic fashion at 14-15 but remained in the fray after winning the second 15-12 against Wali. But he squandared a winning opportunity at match ball after gaining a substantial 14-7 lead in the decider. Wali put Kapoor under pressure by winning crucial points as he closed in at 14-all before hitting a winner to seal victory.

Semi-finals: Niraj and Shishir Shirgaokar bt Amitpal Kohli 15-13,15-9.Xavier Marquis/Bunty Singh bt Riaz Mohd / Sanjay Goyal 15-11,15-9.

Chandrakant Pawar, nine Times National Champion, who lost to Santosh More in Dewan Housing Squash Challenge in August 1998, avenged his defeat by beating him Kanchan Pro Squash & Otters Club Open in May-2000. The 46-year-old Pawar had an answer to every trick of his opponent. At times he appeared spent but somehow gathered all his energy and vitality for the vital points to shut out his confused opponent.
