CHENNAI: Host Tamil Nadu
bagged three of the four titles at stake in the inter-State junior squash
championship, which concluded at the ICL-TNSRA Academy courts here on
Friday. Tamil Nadu, apart from retaining the girls' under-19 and under-15
titles, annexed the girls' under-15 crown too. Delhi `A' bagged the boys'
under-15 title, defeating Tamil Nadu `A' in the final.
So overwhelming was Tamil
Nadu's performance that it lost just two games in the under-19 finals. TN
`A' girls blanked Maharashtra `A' 3-0. And TN boys posted a convincing 2-0
victory over Maharashtra `A'.
Ranked No. 1 in the
country, Dipika Pallikal gave TN a head-start by winning the opener at the
Centre Court for the loss of one game to Shivangi Paranjpe in the girls'
under-19 section. Anwesha Reddy put it across Shivangi's sister Madhura in
straight games while Shibani Philip didn't exert herself too much against
Shaheen Madraswala in the dead rubber.
In the final league match
to decide the winner of the girls' under-15, TN `A' with Dipika in the
lead, scripted a 3-0 win over Maharashtra `A'. The individual events begin
on Saturday.

Maharashtra boys bag double
CHENNAI
OCT. 14.
Tuesday was Maharashtra's day in the National junior inter-State squash
championship. The State won the under-19 and under-15 boys' team titles.
With that the inaugural inter-State phase of the National championship ended
and the individual events got underway at the TNSRA-SDAT courts.
The under-15 title was
to be Maharashtra's anyway as the contestants were the State's main and `B'
teams. For the record the main team won and there was hardly a ripple around
the glass-walled court. But for the other title the opponent was the host's
main team, spearheaded by that irrepressible bundle of energy, Saurav Ghosal.
That Ghosal is a class
above the rest is well known and his winning one match was certain. But that
alone was not enough for Tamil Nadu. It needed another matching show and the
onus was on A. Parthiban tackling the higher rated Sandeep Jangra. As it
happened, Tamil Nadu's hopes lay shattered.
If Parthiban has the
benefit of being trained at the ICL academy, then Sandeep also could claim
some advantage, having spent time here. On court, it was a question of
consistency and the ability to wriggle out of tight situations. That both
are fighters became clear from the penchant the two showed for long rallies.
But after a point
Parthiban's strokes lost their punch and his confidence sagged. For 67
minutes the two kept the supporters glued to the action. But the under-17
top seed in the open event, Sandeep's ascendancy was never in question even
though Parthiban pulled one game back.
The opening match result
saw Maharashtra tighten its grip on the title. It did not matter that Ghosal
was at his dazzling best in beating Vikas Jangra in straight games and
restoring parity in the match scores. For, in the decider Vinayak Shetty's
best was not good enough to upset a higher rated Anurag Gill, who in fact
played with a nagging headache.
Ghosal must have shouted
the loudest to inspire Vinayak but the youngster exhibited little variation
or deception to appear capable of troubling his opponent, let alone
outwitting him. Considering the initial suspense, the enthusiastic fight and
the dazzle by Ghosal, it was a tame finish in the end.
The open events began
concurrently and over 140 first round matches were being held in the
under-19, 17, 15, 13 and 11 categories in both boys' and girls' sections.
Later in the evening,
the open events were formally inaugurated by Maj General Paramjit Singh,
General Officer Commanding, ATNK area. Mr. N. Ramachandran, President, TNSRA
welcomed the gathering. The chief guest also launched the redesigned website

Tamil Nadu girls bag both titles : The Hindu, Chennai
CHENNAI
OCT. 13.
Tamil Nadu pocketed the girls under-19 and under-15 titles in style on
Monday in the National junior inter-State squash championship at the
TNSRA-SDAT courts here.
The result was not unexpected but what
stood out was the dominance of the host. That its star player Joshna
Chinappa made an appearance only for this last round-robin match is ample
reflection of the depth of talent in the Tamil Nadu side. Both the titles
were annexed at the expense of Maharashtra.
Meanwhile there was more to come for Tamil
Nadu with the boys' semifinal getting decided in the evening. In the final
of the under-19 section, Tamil Nadu will take on Maharashtra but in the
under-15 section the two Maharashtra teams will vie for honours. The finals
will be held on Tuesday.
Both the semifinals in the under-19
category were straightforward contests with Tamil Nadu eclipsing New Delhi
and Maharashtra accounting for its `B' team. In the under-15 section,
Maharashtra got the better of Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra `B' defeated
Rajasthan. All the wins had a 3-0 margin.
But the focus was on the girls. Shahnaz
Dastur faced Joshna and could grab just three points, Madhura Pranjpe did
better earning nine points in all against Shruthi Reddy but Shivangi
Paranjpe could muster nothing against Sonali Philip. A shade better was
Maharashtra's effort in the other section. But Shibani Philip, Dipika
Pallikal and Anvesha Reddy were too strong for Madhura, Shivangi and Nikita
Emanuel.
Earlier in the day, Tamil Nadu boys were
tested by the Maharashtra `B' team. Saurav Ghosal's fluency notwithstanding,
Parthiban needed to touch his best to get past the higher-rated Rushabh Vora.
The two having met before and Vora having had victories over the Tamil Nadu
player, the contest was keen. Parthiban however emerged victorious to place
Tamil Nadu on top of the pool. A loss for Parthiban could have taken the
issue to the wire.
