Stuff WHEN Briton Roy Greenfield came to Bombay six months ago on an assignment as consultant to the Bombay Metropolitan Region Development Authority for the city’s transport system, little must he have thought that he would also make the news as a sportsman. This came about when The Leela where Greenfield is staying decided to enter a team for the first suburban squash tournament, sponsored by Monarch and Mudra. Greenfield, who uses the club’s squash courts came to know about the match only after the hotel had played two matches and lost. Greenfield played the third one and was instrumental in The Leela winning it. The new tournament has sparked off interest among the five stars hotels with Holiday Inn also putting up a team and also Juhu Centaur Playmate Club, from Sea Rock hotel, even though this hotel has been closed after bomb blast. Sponsors Mahendra and
Prashant Agarwal’s idea of
the suburban tournament has made purposeful for those who hitherto have
been only casually working up a sweat at the squash courts of the five
stars hotels. Mehta
Upsets Vinit Chouhan Jiten Mehta showed tremendous guts under pressure to upset Vinit Chauhan and give Juhu Gymkhana a3-2 win over The Leela in the opening round of the six team Monarch and Mudra first suburban squash league. Mehta had lost the first two games but won the next two. In the decider he had little respite as the scores were level till 13. Mehta then produced that little extra bit from his reserves and won this second tie. Ram Raghavan and Ashish Soni won their two ties against Rajan Chandorkar and Prashant Agarwal, respectively to clinch Juhu’s win Brian Sopher got the lone win for The Leela, whose professional, Chandrakant Pawar, got a walk over. Pawar, however, pulled out a doubles win for The Leela in partnership with Sopher, beating Jiten Mehta and Sameer Mehra, of Juhu Gymkhana. The other matches were not so well contested. Otters Club beat Holiday Inn 4-1 and Juhu Centaur downed Playmate Club by the same margin. Former national ranked player Arif Patel and state junior Cyrus Poncha are turning out for Otters who are the favourites for the title. After the first round,
Otters and Juhu Centaur lead with 15 points, followed by Juhu Gyhmkhana
(9), The Leela (11), Playmate (5) and Holiday Inn (3). The winners will
take home Rs.4,000 an the runners- up Rs.2,000. Matches are played every
