INTRODUCTION
AND DETAILS ABOUT THE COURSE, MANUAL AND AUTHOR Indian Squash
Professionals (ISP) is
India’s most active Squash body. It is a non-profit NGO, recognized by
the Government of India with several commendations from Prime Minister,
State Chief ministers etc. Formed in 1993, it holds the distinction of
having organized the highest number of tournaments in India (over 75),
having organized India’s richest tournament and having organized the
maximum number of coaching camps. With this course, it aims to enhance the
coaching skills of several coaches all across India, as well as to develop
a network of coaching information sharing. The course is open to players
as well as parents in order to disseminate coaching information as widely
as possible. Amitoj Inder
Singh is India’s highest
qualified Squash coach. He is the Technical Director of ISP. He has
coached for about 10 years, starting in July 1997 at Yadavindra Public
School (YPS), Chandigarh, where he was a student from 1984 to 1987 and had
picked up Squash. He has produced several Champions, including India’s
first male Scottish Junior Open Champion. Under his coaching, YPS won its
first All India Inter School title at its debut in the tournament in his
very first year of coaching. Amitoj Inder Singh has coached in several
renowned Public schools in addition to YPS, such as Welham Boys’ School,
Rashtriya Indian Military College, Doon School, Bishop Cotton School, and
St. John’s School Chandigarh etc. He has organized several tournaments
while in Chandigarh, as well as several coaching camps in Chandigarh,
Mumbai and Delhi. He has helped develop other coaches, including
introducing well-educated coaches into coaching as his assistants, who are
now working successfully independently. His efforts towards rectifying the
way Squash is run in India are known worldwide. He has coached in Mumbai
for the last four years and has helped develop several champions,
including producing a new Under-9 champion. He has endeavored to broadbase
the game and through this course, aims to share his acumen with all those
who desire to obtain it. This Advanced
Coach’s Course is part of a two level course. The complete
package of courses is aimed at- a)
Dissemination of coaching knowledge to coaches, players and parents
of players desirous of acquiring it b)
Establishing a network amongst coaches and others for knowledge
sharing on an ongoing basis The courses confirm
to the approach of enhancing Coaches’ capabilities through a method
known as Competency Based Learning (CBL), whereby coaches will eventually
demonstrate competencies in each of the aspects and coaching skills
covered in the courses. The courses are unique, and different from
anything done earlier in Indian squash, in respect that they also use a
hands-on approach whereby most of the concepts dealt with in lectures are
explained through application on ‘subject’ players during the courses.
Further, no candidate will be ‘failed’; instead, efforts will be
towards enhancing competency in areas required on an ongoing basis. The broad objective
parameters of this Advanced Coach’s Course are- i)
To define personal philosophy of coaching ii)

Manual- Given
that the course is based on CBL and a ‘hands-on’ approach involving
practical situations, as well as extensive group discussions and debates
during the course, the manual is styled as a ‘manual-cum-workbook’.
The topics are headlined, some information provided therein,
and sufficient blank space provided for candidates to make their own notes
based on the learning gathered and assimilations made. Questions and space
for answers is provided where appropriate. That adequate and appropriate
learning and information is actually acquired will be determined through
Exercises and Assignments. Time is allocated for discussion with the
presenter and other experts at the end of each day as appropriate, for
candidates to share their opinions and knowledge and cement their
learning, and space provided to make notes thereof. In view of this
format, video recording of the course is permitted and advisable. The information
provided in the manual, as well as the information to be imparted by the
presenter during the course is based on his own coaching qualification,
extensive experience, and interaction with several coaches across the
world, mentorship and guidance from world-renowned coaches and extensive
research on the Internet. This course is unique in that the coaching
information available worldwide is presented in context and relevance to
the Indian coaching situation. The next level course involves further
details on some of the topics from this course, as well as several other
topics relevant to coaching high-performance players. Seen together, the
course objectives and the format of the courses and manuals, the
highlight of the coaching program is that candidates will not simply have
in-depth knowledge, but will also be in a position to apply that knowledge
immediately in appropriate situations. Course
